Update Р7:51p: As The Fizz reported this morning, Trevor Cooney tweeted that he has indeed signed with Syracuse.
Also, four recruits officially signed with Steve “Greaseball” Lavin, three of which are ranked in ESPNU’s Top 100. The Red Storm also received another verbal commitment.

An anonymous Fizz source spoke to Orange recruit Trevor Cooney earlier in the week, and has told The Fizz that the shooting guard plans on officially signing with Syracuse Wednesday, which is the first day of college basketball’s early signing period.
Stan Waterman: ‚ÄúAs for the recruiting, the phone continues to ring but I believe that Syracuse is the favorite.‚Äù¬†Here’s what The Fizz wrote:
“Cooney‚Äôs still got a lot of time to go before he has to make a decision, and has¬†offers from all over the place¬†including Villanova, Pitt and Maryland.
However, Cooney’s made a handful of trips to attend games (Notre Dame last year, Marquette this year) and has said he has a great relationship with Mike Hopkins.
Can Hop do it again?”

“I’ve built a good relationship with Hop, so we’ve become pretty close over the last year or so.”
We already know SU basketball is sitting pretty with its recruiting class of ’11. Cooney is part of a loaded 2011 class that also features Top-20 recruits Rakeem Christmas and Michael Carter-Williams. Rivals ranks it as the year’s sixth-best class.
Meanwhile, Steve Lavin hasn’t even been on the job at St. John’s for a year and he’s managed to pull together the fifth-best recruiting class in the nation?
Couzens’ media day report for The Fizz discussed Lavin trying to play catch-up after losing all of Norm Roberts’ recruits. I just didn’t realize just how quickly he’s done it.
I know he was a pretty face for ESPN, but seriously? Top five? I’m sure tons of programs are kicking themselves now, knowing they let Lavin sit behind a microphone for years when all they had to do say the word, watch this guy slick back his hair, and proceed to convince a hoard of the country’s top high school ballers to flock to a perennial conference bottom feeder.
I think ‘Cuse fans will grow to hate Steve “British Petroleum” Lavin quickly.
