The latest addition to Syracuse’s 22-strong 2015 recruiting class is linebacker Doyle “Biggie” Grimes from Champagnat Catholic high school in Hialeah, Florida.
The two high schools Grimes has attended have many connections to the SU football program. He currently attends the same high school as 2015 cornerback Gerald Robinson, which is in the same town as 2014 quarterback Alin Edouard’s school, Hialeah Senior high school. Grimes transferred to Champagnat Catholic from South Dade high school where 2014 cornerback Antwan Cordy attended. Both Champagnat Catholic and South Dade won state titles last season.
Grimes was unranked at the time of his commitment but has recently earned a 2-star rating from rivals.com.
He may be unknown to many Syracuse fans, but the local Florida media has given Grimes nothing but praise.¬†Sfhighschoolsports.com¬†tells readers to, ‚ÄúRemember this name. [Grimes] may very well be the best linebacker in south Florida when the junior class is sorted out and all of the talent is examined.”¬†A Miami University recruiting site,¬†Canesinsight.com,¬†called Grimes a ‚Äúplayer set to emerge‚Äù in 2013.
And emerge he did. In his tape titled “STATE CHAMPS,” Grimes displays his speed and physical nature in every play. It is clear to see that he was one of the main defensive contributors to South Dade’s state championship run.
George McDonald sold Grimes on SU right when his stock was about to take off. West Virginia offered him in early June and an offer from Miami may also have been on the way (the school had been in contact with him as early as August 2013). Grimes’ brother Jamal Carter plays safety for the Hurricanes.
In late May Grimes tweeted that he plans on graduating high school early in December, which most likely means he will enroll early at SU, another positive sign for Scott Shafer and SU football.
