Sterling Hofrichter tells the Fizz about his Florida state championship game performance, how Syracuse became interested in him and much more two months before National Signing Day.
The kicker hit a 40-yard field goal in the state title game against Miami Central, but it was not enough as Armwood fell 24-10.
“I’m very proud [of my team]. We got to the state final last year and got blown out. This year we were saying we were going to go back and we did. We had a great season, I wish we could have one that last game, but other than that we had a fantastic season.”
Another SU commit, defensive end Keivonnis Davis, plays for that Miami Central team. Hofrichter and Davis spoke briefly after the state final.
“I knew someone on the team was going to Syracuse. I thought it was him so I asked him are you going to Syracuse and he said yeah and I was like alright I’ll see you there. That was really al we really talked about.”
SU’s future kicker went on to share the story of how Scott Shafer initially become interested in him. Hofrichter was kicking field goals from about midfield because Armwood’s offense was on one side of the field and the defense was on the other. He was drilling 50 and 60 yarders, which impressed SU’s coach.
“Coach Lester, [Coach Shafer], and my head coach were all next to each other. I think they were talking and I think [Coach Shafer] told Coach Callahan (Hofrichter’s high school coach) that if I made it he was going to offer me, but he never told me personally that if I made it then he would offer me.”
That’s an interesting way of recruiting from Coach Shafer. Listen to the complete Hofrichter interview here. Remember to follow the Fizz on Twitter @OrangeFizz to stay up to date on everything SU basketball and football recruiting.
