The JUCO Route – Who Else Is SU After?

Syracuse received a commitment and signature yesterday from junior college linebacker Ryan Guthrie. He is the first member of Syracuse’s 2017 class to officially sign. Now that the JUCO signing period has begun (it opened on Wednesday) the Orange is actively pursuing other players as well.

Ravian Pierce

Pierce was a 4-star high school tight end recruit who had to go the junior college route. He signed with Mississippi State two years ago, but did not qualify academically. He was committed to play at the school this year, but then opened up his recruitment last month.

The tight end took an official visit to Syracuse in November and is now being pursued by other SEC schools in addition to SU.

This would be a major recruiting win for the Orange with the school’s lack of depth at the tight end position and the fact that Pierce is ranked as the 30th best JUCO prospect in the country by Scout.com

Brandon Berry

As we saw last season, the SU coaching staff is always looking to beef up its defensive line. Berry, a defensive end from Georgia, stands at 6’4 and weighs 234 pounds.

In addition to Syracuse, Minnesota and Colorado State have recruited Berry. He has visited Colorado State and received a visit from a member of Minnesota’s coaching staff this month.

Marquise Blair

Remember him? The one time safety commit from Ohio has spent the last two seasons playing junior college ball at Dodge City. He still holds an offer from Syracuse, but it’s unclear if the Orange coaching staff is pursuing Blair the same way they are with Pierce and Berry.

Blair ranks as the 19th rated player in Scout’s list of the Top 100 JUCO players.
