Syracuse Revives Big East Rivalries in Ambitious 2027 Schedule

In May, newly named head coach Gerry McNamara stood before more than 2,000 of Syracuse University’s most passionate fans at his official introductory press conference, making his intentions on the Hill clear.

“I’m here to win,” he said, promising to return Syracuse to national prominence while leading the program where he became a legend during the Orange’s 2003 national championship run.

And Syracuse’s revamped 2027 schedule already reflects McNamara’s aggressive “win-now” mentality. Rather than easing into a new era with a lighter slate, the Orange have assembled a demanding non-conference schedule filled with marquee matchups and high-profile tests that will thrust the program back into the national spotlight early in the season.

Of SU’s 14 non-conference games, five will come against Power Five opponents — and all five matchups are scheduled away from the Dome. Syracuse will face Providence in Boston and Indiana in Indianapolis before taking part in the annual ACC/SEC Challenge, where the Orange aim to build on last season’s statement victory against then 23rd ranked Tennessee.

SU’s early campaign is highlighted with an old Big-East battle against St. Johns, where the Orange will return to Madison Square Garden for the first time since 2021. In Rick Pitino’s 4th season at the helm, the Jonnies are – who will come into the season ranked for the 3rd straight year  – despite returning only two of their top 8 scorers from last year.

And this afternoon, the Orange once again boated its non-conference schedule with another vintage Big-East clash with Rutgers.

And while this follows a larger trend of early season scheduling – as seen this season with John Scheyer’s Duke Blue Devils and Dusty May’s Michigan Wolverines – the demanding slate signals a clear shift for SU basketball. Under McNamara, the program is paving a new way to reinvent itself, embracing high-profile competition immediately rather than gradually rebuilding out of the spotlight.
