There were moments Syracuse fans genuinely wondered if this would ever happen again.
Not just a good season.
Not just a tournament run.
This.
Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse is headed back to the Final Four after a gritty 13-11 win over North Carolina Tar Heels men’s lacrosse, and in doing so, the Orange accomplished something the program hadn’t done since 2009:
Back-to-back Final Fours.
For almost any other program, that drought wouldn’t sound catastrophic. For Syracuse lacrosse?
It felt like an eternity. It felt like grip on the sport had been lost for good.
Because this isn’t just another program. This is the program. The sport’s defining brand. The place built by giants.
And that’s what made the job facing Gary Gait almost impossible when he took over in 2021.
Every coach before him wasn’t merely successful — they were legends. Titans of the sport. He replaced John Desko, who won at a staggering level with a .750 winning percentage and five national championships.
But by the end of Desko’s tenure, the sport had changed dramatically.
Lacrosse exploded nationally. Syracuse joined the ACC. The days of the Orange simply overwhelming everyone with talent and mystique were over. Powerhouses emerged everywhere, even in places out west.
The sport caught up.
And for a while, it felt like Syracuse never fully adjusted.
When Gait took the job, he promised to restore Syracuse lacrosse to prominence. That’s easy to say when you’re already the greatest player in program history. Expectations weren’t high — they were impossible.
And now?
He’s delivering.
This version of Syracuse lacrosse feels like Syracuse again. Tenacious. Underdog. Winning the faceoff dot. Elite goaltending.
This is what SU lax should be. Not just nostalgic relevance.
Current relevance.
The win over UNC wasn’t just another tournament victory. It was validation that the climb back is real. Syracuse isn’t just visiting championship weekend anymore.
The Orange are becoming what they used to be:
A perennial title contender.
And for a fan base that spent years wondering if the sport had permanently shifted away from Syracuse, this moment feels enormous.
Gary Gait promised he would bring the program back.
Now he’s got the Orange two wins away from proving it completely.
