It is a possibility, but one that will take effort from the Syracuse men’s basketball team to make happen. As of right now, Jim Boeheim is in line to win his 1,000th game as a coach, right here at home on Jim Boeheim court in the Carrier Dome.
The Orange just have to win their next four games straight for it to become reality.
Here are the next four games for Syracuse:
Tues. 1/24/17 Wake Forest HOME
Sat. 1/28/17 Florida State HOME
Wed. 2/1/17 NC State AWAY
Sat. 2/4/17 Virginia HOME
While four seems like a small number and an easy streak for the Syracuse basketball team to go on, SU’s 2016-2017 struggles have made it look harder to accomplish than it may initially seem.
The last time the Orange has won four straight was when they started out 4-0 on the season, against Colgate, Holy Cross, Monmouth and South Carolina State.
SU crushed Wake Forest last year 83-55 away, went 1-1 against Florida State the two times the teams met last season, won against 75-66 at home against NC State last year and beat Virginia in the 68-26 Elite Eight NCAA Tournament thriller at the end of last season.
So it is possible, but again, this is this year now, not last year’s Final Four squad.
Boeheim currently has 996 coaching wins, and with four more, Boeheim would become just the second coach to win 1,000 games at the Division I men’s basketball level.
However, in NCAA record books, Boeheim would only be achieving 899 wins while Syracuse fans celebrate the 1,000th. After the NCAA completed its investigation into Syracuse basketball in 2015 for violations that occurred in the years past, the NCAA took away 101 of Boeheim’s coaching wins on the record.
For Syracuse fans, though, Boeheim’s 1,000th coaching win would not seem diminished in any way. (It might even call for a storming of the court, if it happens at home.)
And if the Orange drop one of the next four games, setting up a possible away win for Boeheim’s 1,000th? Well, Syracuse fans aren’t the type to root against their team, no matter what the circumstance.
