Early Sunday morning Syracuse landed three-star recruit Damien Alford from Hollywood, Florida. Alford was wrapping up his official visit to SU when he committed per Michael Mcallister.
Alford’s commitment gives Syracuse 16 commits with the early signing period just days away. And his commitment brings some much needed juice to SU’s 2020 class.
He also becomes the third best commit for the Orange per 247sports. The 6-foot-5 receiver had offers from some of the best programs in the country, including Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida State and Miami.
Alford is originally from Canada but moved to Florida last year. He was also originally a member of the 2021 recruiting class before reclassifying. Alford becomes SU’s first true wide receiver of the 2020 recruiting class although ATH Trebor Pena from New Jersey could also play receiver.
Per 247sports, Alford was scheduled to take an official visit to Kentucky, but has since cancelled the visit. When speaking about Syracuse Alford said, “It feels like home, no more visits.” Alford intends on making his signing official on December 18th.
This past season Syracuse lacked a physical big receiver like Alford. Taj Harris was SU’s biggest consistent receiver at 6-foot-2, and he’s more of a quick receiver. Syracuse returns all of its top receivers besides slot receiver Sean Riley who had just six yards receiving in SU’s final three games.
From Alford’s film, it’s clear that he uses his size as an advantage. Alford is comfortable springing into the air for a ball on the outside over outmatched defensive backs. He’s also faster than most of the players defending him but that could change against ACC competition. However, Alford gives DeVito a weapon who he can launch a jump ball to. Alford basically has the size of a tight end, with the speed and physical traits of a receiver.
