The Fizz‚Äôs¬†Dave Van Moffaert is one of the most tapped in sources for SU football recruiting news. Until Signing Day, DVM is working the phones, and posting his predictions, rankings and buzz on how the recruiting class takes shape. Here’s his first two installments of the ‚ÄúScoop.‚Äù ¬†Part I¬†-¬†Part II
With less than two weeks left until National Signing Day, the recruiting landscape is starting to clarify. We’re getting a good picture of which prospects SU is in to. But even clearer are which recruits have no interest in coming to Syracuse. Let’s help Orange Nation focus on the important races by giving you the top 4 names who won’t be coming to SU:
- Anthony Standifer – DB (Crete, IL)
The Fizz¬†highlighted Standifer¬†earlier this month as a potential target for Syracuse after his decommittment from Michigan and need in the secondary. You can never count Tyrone Wheatley out for recruits in his home state, so there seemed to be a small chance to land Standifer. Not happening. With offers from big time programs such as Boise State and Notre Dame, SU is down the totem pole for Anthony. He just scratched Ohio State, but has a trip to Pittsburgh set up. Too bad. He would’ve been a huge help in the Orange‚Äôs weak secondary.
- Barrington Morris – OLB (Piper HS, FL)
A couple of national recruiting sites indicate Morris has a scholarship offer from the Orange. He was also rumored to be visiting the Hill this weekend. Neither are true. The Fizz spoke to Barrington’s HC, Tom Marante, who said SU is not in the mix and has not extended a formal offer to the big OLB. Marante said that BM is receiving a lot of attention from UConn, Maryland and Northern Illinois. He is a hybrid OLB/DE that could have been an other pass rusher that SU has been targeting of late.
- Justin Thomason – DE (Eagles Landing Christian Academy, GA)
Thomason‚Äôs head coach, Jonanthan Gess, told The Fizz two weeks ago JT was very interested in the Orange, along with¬†UNC, Vanderbilt, N.C. State, and Western Kentucky. Since then, the DE’s preferences have changed. Justin has named his top 4 and SU is not in it. The Fizz had Thomason in the top 5 most likely to land a spot at Syracuse last week. But with SU nabbing verbals from two defensive ends this this week in 3-star Josh Manley¬†and JUCO Mark Garrick,¬†it’s not shocking the Orange didn‚Äôt makes JT‚Äôs final cut.
- Yoshoub Timms – DL (Fort Walton Beach, FL)
The Fizz has also learned Syracuse pulled its offer from the Florida defensive lineman. It didn’t seem like¬†Syracuse was a favorite of Timms after talking with him last week. Syracuse was recruiting him since late spring, and was once considered a top target for Doug Marrone’s staff. He is now crossed off the list.
There are now 22 verbal commits for the ‚Äô12 class, which means there’s still a handful of scholarships left. SU must choose these last prospects wisely. Here is The Fizz‚Äôs¬†updated top 5 targets.
- Wayne Morgan РDB (Erasmus Hall, NY) Odds of committing to SU : 70%
- Zian Jones – DT (West LA , CA) Odds: 45%
- Josh Glanton – LB (Haines City HS, FL) Odds: 40%
- Marcus Pierce-Brewster – DE (San Francisco City College) Odds: 35%
- Dalton Crossan РRB (North Sachem, NY) Odds: 25%
Morgan is the top prize and is the one prospect the Dougie and his staff has to land. NSD is just 13 days away.¬†Follow¬†The Fizz‚Äôs¬†Twitter for the latest¬†SU recruiting news on who’s in, who’s out on SU’s class of ’12.
