Syracuse’s Most Important Players: #2 Andre Cisco

If all goes right for Andre Cisco this season, he’ll be well on his way to a first-round draft pick in 2021. Since SU is switching to a 3-3-5 defense, he’ll be the “rover” which allows him to further weaponize his ball-hawking skillset. Cisco is clearly the best player on the roster and it’s not close. While this team probably won’t be very good, Cisco could be the difference between a couple wins and losses.

Why Syracuse Needs Him

After being named a preseason First Team All-American by the Associated Press, expectations are already extremely high. But Syracuse needs Cisco to have one of the best campaigns ever by a player in Orange. Cisco needs to be an interception leader across college football – like he was in his freshman season. SU also needs Cisco to be better against the run, although putting him in the rover position allows him to be more of a center fielder against the pass. Without having an actual coverage, Tony White is allowing Cisco to just go make plays.

Best Case Scenario

It isn’t far fetched to believe that Cisco could finish the season as a consensus First Team All-American and be drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. But the absolute best case scenario for Cisco and Syracuse, is one where Cisco’s name becomes synonymous with the 2020 college football season. For the Orange to be average, Cisco must be exceptional. In the rover role, Cisco could reach double-digit interception numbers, and could be in the conversation for some of the top awards given to college football players – offense or defense.

Worst Case Scenario

Really the worst case scenario is similar to last season where Cisco was hurt and missed time. Even when he returned, he clearly wasn’t 100% for a large chunk of the season. After working his way back, it took him about a month to look like a premier defender in the ACC. But in the last three games, Cisco had an interception in each contest. Besides injury concerns, there’s a chance that he has issues picking up the 3-3-5 defense. But that’s speculation, which you could say about any player in a new scheme. In all honesty, Cisco should excel at the rover role and reach new heights to cap off his Syracuse career.
