Trill Williams Signed as UFA by New Orleans Saints

Former SU defensive back Trill Williams is getting a shot in the NFL. The New Orleans Saints signed Williams as an undrafted free agent Saturday evening shortly after the draft concluded

Williams joins the Saints and will have the chance to compete in a solid secondary room featuring three-time Pro Bowlers Malcolm Jenkins and Marshon Lattimore. The Saints’ defense was a particularly strong unit in 2020, ranking 5th in points allowed and 5th in passing yards allowed. New Orleans’ 18 defensive interceptions also ranked best in the league.

Williams played slot corner at SU, but has the size more akin to an NFL safety at 6’2 198 lbs. Out of every spot in the Saints’ defensive backfield, Williams likely has the best chance to contend for the left cornerback spot vacated by Janoris Jenkins, who was released on March 6th by the Saints and later signed with the Tennessee Titans. Third-year pro C.J. Gardner-Johnson currently occupies Jenkins’ former spot on the depth chart after starting 20 combined games over the past two seasons. However, Williams’ versatility could see him used in different roles, including special teams.

In his Syracuse career, Williams was a three-year contributor who played in 28 games, 15 of which were starts. He totaled three forced fumbles, 10 deflections, and four interceptions over that span.
