Fizz Report Card: Virginia Demolishes Syracuse 84-62

That was ugly. I don’t even know if it can get uglier than that game. Syracuse loses its ACC opener in a tough environment. 10 minutes in, the Orange were still in the game but the final 3 were dominated by the Cavaliers. Here are some grades from today.

Team Defense: D

Virginia is a team that is known for its great defense and sometimes lackluster offense. But today you’d think that the Cavalier’s offense was their strong point. After the first 10 minutes of the game, UVA scored whenever it wanted to. Whether it was getting wide open shots or driving to the lane or ball movement, Virginia found easy ways to score.

Judah Mintz: D

There is a lot of pressure on the point guard. There’s no doubt about it. But Judah Mintz can’t have off games if this team wants to win. Judah struggled on the defensive end today. Played too much hero ball and got flustered when things didn’t go his way. Mintz has really struggled in two of the last three games. Yes, the first was against Chaminade and he had a career game against LSU. But, he needs to be consistent every game.

Naheem McLeod: F+

It’s truly baffling how a 7’4 center can’t rebound the ball or be at all aggressive on the offensive end. McLeod struggled with turnovers today and every time he touched the ball it would be taken away. McLeod can’t be on the floor all game long and there’s a reason for it.

JJ Starling: C+

If there’s any positive at all from today’s game it would have to be JJ. He finally made a couple three pointers and had double-digit points. Starling had a couple of solid drives and did a really good job finishing around the rim when he got there.
