“The Bigs Are Coming” — Syracuse Lands 7-Footer as McNamara’s Defensive Identity Takes Shape

Ryan Blackwell said it. “The bigs are coming.”

And one day later, he delivered.

Syracuse Orange men’s basketball landed international center Abdramane Siby out of the portal — a true 7-footer with a ridiculous 7-foot-6 wingspan and exactly the kind of defensive presence this program has been missing.

We’re starting to see the identity fit into place. The early blueprint under Gerry McNamara is becoming crystal clear:

Syracuse is going to defend.

Hard.

After years of inconsistency, late-game collapses, and a team that often looked like it had no defining trait, McNamara is building something with definition.

Toughness. Length. Rim protection. Defensive accountability.

As Blackwell put it to Samantha Croston:

“We have guys who are willing to guard… guys who are locked in on the defensive end.”

That should make Orange fans smile.

Because defense is the great equalizer.

You may not always have the biggest NIL budget (and Syracuse certainly won’t). You may not always win every portal battle (although Jim Boeheim recently said the NIL budget has increased). But if you can defend? If you can protect the rim, create turnovers, and make life miserable for opponents?

You can win toss-up games.

You can survive some big games in March.

You can become dangerous.

That’s why Siby matters.

A 7-footer with elite length immediately changes how opponents attack the basket. Pair that with perimeter dogs like Garwey Dual, and suddenly Syracuse is starting to look like a team with a real defensive backbone.

That’s how programs get competitive fast. This is a purpose in roster construction.

You can actually see what Syracuse is trying to be.

Long. Physical. Defensive. Let’s see the next pieces.
