FizzCast: Recruit Gerald Robinson Says He’ll “Absolutely” Still Consider Syracuse

Listen to the South Florida corner discuss the SU situation.

Gerald “Bubba” Robinson told the Fizz¬†that there was no specific reason for why he chose to reopen his commitment and decommit from Syracuse.

‚ÄúThey weren’t frustrated at all. I talked it over with my family and they just want to make sure that I go with my best fit,‚Äù Robinson said. He went on to say that he is focused on his senior season at Champagnat Catholic in Hialeah, Florida and will think about his college choice later on. To the suggestion that chatter from the SU staff has dissipated?

“I don’t think it’s any chatter going down. I just think they’ve been going through some things. I’m just gonna stay away from that. I don’t really want to get into that.”

Since Robinson is a Florida kid there is speculation that George McDonald‚Äôs demotion from offensive coordinator to receivers coach has something to do with the de-commitment. The corner refuted that claim and added, ‚ÄúNo, it didn’t affect anything. I haven‚Äôt talked to coach McDonald about [the demotion]. I‚Äôm hoping I hear from him soon and see what‚Äôs going on.‚Äù

Does he hope to hear from McDonald? “Yes, of course. I’d be glad to listen. I’ll talk to him sure. I’ll still be looking at Syracuse. I’ll be looking at that (early playing time).”

Robinson is tight with incoming quarterback Alin Eduoard. “He was just telling me, he went through the same thing. He was just telling me, ‘Don’t forget about the Orange.’ I’ve been close to a few (Syracuse recruits).”¬†

It appears that Robinson will be lucky if he talks with McDonald, however. He told the Post-Standard that he only hears from Syracuse in total about once a month. He said to The Fizz he thinks that is because the program has been going through some things lately. The Orange is being investigated by the NCAA and has lost six of its last seven games. But, failing to stay in touch with a commit because of these issues is a major problem for the program. It sounds like there’s more to this story.

There is still a chance Robinson ends up coming to the Hill, however. Unlike when safety/linebacker Daiquan Kelly de-committed from SU, Robinson has not flipped his commitment. In his final words to the The Fizz, the corner said that SU is “absolutely” still in the discussion for him. Let’s see how this plays out.
