Fort Lauderdale native Colin Byrne chatted with the Fizz this afternoon and had some interesting things to say about the George McDonald situation. Byrne said Syracuse’s former offensive coordinator initially recruited him but then when he left the program for NC State Joe Adam took over. Luckily for the ‘Cuse, McDonald’s departure didn’t sway Byrne or his high school teammate and fellow o-lineman, Sam Clausman.
Byrne and Clausman didn’t flip, but what about the Florida kids (McDonald’s main recruiting region) that did? Would defensive line commit Keivonnis Davis not have chosen to jump ship if McDonald had stayed put? What about Marshall-bound linebacker Doyle Grimes; would he be an SU commit if McDonald did not leave?
The Orange wanted to bulk up on the offensive and defensive lines this recruiting cycle and the team has done just that. Byrne’s comments beg the question though, what would SU’s 2015 class look like if the whole McDonald fiasco had never occurred?
