In early January Missouri defensive end Jerrion Nelson tweeted that he had been offered a scholarship from Syracuse. The Fizz spoke with Nelson earlier this week about his high school recruitment.
On where he stands with SU
“Right now I’m just going to visit places and then after that I’ll make my decision. Syracuse is definitely in my top, I like Syracuse, I’ve always been a Syracuse fan, a Jim Boeheim fan. I used to play basketball so I was just a big fan of Syracuse and stuff…Then I started getting into football… and I started liking Syracuse football a little bit.”
On a potential visit before National Signing Day
“I’m not sure [about a visit yet]… We’ve got to set up a for sure date, pretty soon. Once I talk to Coach Ward we’ll get that set up and then we’ll be good.”
On what he’s looking forward to seeing on his visit
“I want to check out the classrooms. I’ve got to make sure I’m getting a good education. My mom always stresses the education so I’ve got to make sure I can get the classroom part down. I’m excited to see all of the facilities, the atmosphere.”
On when he plans to commit
“It will either be on National Signing Day or before. I don’t really know. I’ve got to sit down with my mom and [talk it over].
On the effect the Bowling Green coaches transitioning to Syracuse have on his recruitment
[That definitely has an effect.] Coach Ward is a really good dude. He can relate to a lot of the stuff that I’ve been through in my life…We’ve been through some of the same things so he can understand where I’m coming from and stuff. I like the coaches that I’ve talked to so it’s pretty good.
