Carl Jones Explains His Journey From High School Receiver To Division One Corner

The SU defensive back is relatively new to the position.

Cornerback Carl Jones committed to Syracuse in mid December after impressing for his St. Edwards high school team (OH) during their state championship run. He talked with the Fizz about SU’s appeal, how he really just started to play in the secondary and much more.

Jones says he’s excited to follow some of his high school teammates and play big time college football.

“It was just a huge weight off of my shoulders. A lot of guys have come through St. Ed’s. A lot of guys around me are playing big time college football and just to have the same experience that they’re going through right now it just means the world to me.”

Coach Tom Kaufman and Nick Monroe mainly recruited Jones.

“They were straight to the point. They felt as if they liked my film. They felt like I was a high character guy, good grades and what not. They felt as if I’d be a good fit for the Tampa Two defense that they run.”

Jones is excited to join former St. Ed’s star and SU sophomore linebacker Troy Henderson Jr.

“It’s definitely going to be a positive, definitely a benefit. I know a lot of guys that say they go away to college and the first month or so it’s kind of difficult because you don’t have anyone to lean on and talk to besides your parents at home. So it’ll definitely be a good thing to not only have somebody back home with me, but someone who’s been through it before and Troy has a year under his belt so he kind of knows the ropes a little bit.”

Cornerback is a relatively new position to the Ohio native.

“I didn’t really play corner until the sixth game of [my senior] season…I just played predominantly receiver all four years there…my coach felt that I could make some plays on that side of the ball. I played it all throughout the summer, but I never really got any game experience until week three or four in the nickel and then week six I was a full blown starter.”
