How exactly can a person put a year into context?
365 days? 8,760 hours? 31,536,000 seconds?
What about in moments? It’s said we experience about 20,000 individual moments in a day (“How Full is Your Bucket” by Clifton and Rath).
So as a sports fan, maybe “big moments” or highlights? Like a game-changing Eric Dungey play or an Orange basketball comeback win.
Maybe statistics do the trick?
Syracuse football was ranked as high as #12 in 2018. Eric Dungey broke and now holds 20 SU football individual records, including career passing yards (9340 yards).
Or in successes and failures? Wins and losses?
Like Syracuse football winning its first bowl game since 2013 and having its first 10-win season since 2001 to capstone 2018. Or SU basketball falling short against Duke in the Sweet Sixteen back in March by four points (yeah, let’s keep that in the past).
In 2018, there were some highest of highs. In 2018, there were some lowest of lows. Overall, 2018 was a successful year.
One day at a time, one game at a time, each of the stories played out. From here going forward, many of those stories will continue to be told. We will look back and look forward. Storied programs are made by a past that is over that helps build the way things will be now and next.
Through losses and wins, 2018 provided quite the ride. Excitement, disappointment, exhilaration, frustration. But, in all, we are ending in a good place.
So as you reflect on 2018, it’s time to get excited for 2019. Every 2019 March Madness seed and bowl game is still undecided.
We get another year of thrills and community as we watch it play out, one day, one hour, one second, one moment, one highlight, one statistic at a time.
Happy New Year.
