Syracuse Finalist For Four-Star Safety

It’s been a relatively slow start to the 2020 cycle for SU. Four-star safety Jared Greenfield could change all that in a hurry with one decision on Monday though. The California native has cut his list to the five schools below and is set to announce his decision June 10th.

One of those schools is not like the other, amiright? SU made the list along with four west coast schools with strong football backing, which is pretty impressive considering Greenfield‚Äôs ratings–87 overall and 484th overall in the 2020 class on 247sports–and the geographical barrier. ¬†

He’s a ballhawk of a defensive back that would add to an already impressive foundation of pass defenders for the future with Andre Cisco, Cornelius Nunn, Trill Williams and others. Babers has recruited very well for need since taking the job. Safety, and the secondary as a whole for that matter, has gone from a weakness to a budding strength in a few short years. Greenfield would no doubt add to that and you’d think the instant stardom for Cisco makes him even more confident in the coaching staff and his potential growth at that position, if he did choose the Orange.

Here’s the bad news: reports indicate he has never been on the SU campus. So how on earth is he going to go to a school he’s never seen? Well, that brings us to the good news: the SU coaching staff and his coaching staff at Narbonne high school out in Harbor City, California have a strong relationship.

You might recognize the name of that school because it’s the same high school current Orange wideout Sean Riley went to. Not to mention, SU’s coaches have been out to see him a lot. He included the Orange in the top five, so that logic says Syracuse has at least a fighters chance.

Logic would also say Greenfield’s college choice will come from one of those five schools he mentioned in his tweet back on May 15th. On 247sports.com crystal ball, all six recruiting experts that have submitted a prediction for Greenfield have him going to Oregon. A strong 100% that pegs them as the consensus front-runners. But, then you look at his twitter avatar picture.

Greenfield is rocking the Carolina blue, a team not mentioned in his top five tweet. Perhaps, because he tweeted they made him an offer almost two weeks after that top five announcement tweet was sent out back on May 15th.

That looks like a man ready to jump on the Mack Brown bandwagon. Maybe it means nothing more than he likes those jerseys, but either way that would certainly qualify as catching people off guard.

Picking Syracuse would also be a surprise. It’s probably a long shot at this point. Recruiting experts say Oregon. His twitter says UNC, if anything. Regardless, SU being included in the top five for a prized recruit on the other side of the country says a lot about the growth of the program under Dino Babers.

One of the best ways to attract big name guys like Greenfield is by winning. It might take another winning season this upcoming year before the Orange start seeing a Greenfield type talent toss the Orange cap on come National Signing Day, but the pieces are being put in motion. This is a positive sign whether he surprises experts on Monday or not.
