Can Chris Slayton Have an Impact on the Giants in 2019?

With the 245th pick in the NFL Draft, the Giants selected defensive tackle Chris Slayton from Syracuse. He became only the second player from SU to be drafted in the last 3 years, after the Colts drafted Zaire Franklin last year. For more Syracuse football news, go to SU football on the Fizz.

Can Slayton have an immediate impact on the team? First, let’s talk about the Giants’ season in general.

NY Giants 2019 Betting Odds

Bookmakers already have their odds ready when it comes to Super Bowl LIV, and the Giants are way down the list. Bet365 currently gives them odds of +6600, which is no surprise since the Giants will be happy just to make the playoffs.

When it comes to the favorites, the Patriots have odds of +700, the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints are +800, and the Rams own odds of +750. It’s pretty hard to make any betting predictions before the season starts, but many football fans simply can‚Äôt wait. Giants Season Preview

Apart from Slayton, the Giants also selected QB Daniel Jones out of Duke, who is expected to replace Eli Manning once he retires or leaves in free agency. Many think they could’ve waited to pick him later in the draft and not use a top-10 pick on him, but they got the man they wanted which is all that matters. They also added other quality pieces in the draft, who could help them down the road.

Perhaps the biggest move of the offseason was the signing of Pro-Bowl wide receiver Golden Tate, who won the Super Bowl with the Seahawks. But Tate is now dealing with a suspension for a banned substance. They also signed defensive end Olsen Pierre, and linebacker Marcus Golden. Safety Landon Collins, guard Janon Brown, and cornerback B.W. Webb ended up leaving in the offseason.

The Giants will open up the season against the Cowboys, one of the co-favorites for the NFC East with the Eagles. This game will be an early measuring stick, and the Giants face a tough schedule in both halves of the season. It will be hard for the young roster to make significant strides this season, but the future could look promising.

Can Slayton Help?

The Giants are known to draft big and strong interior defensive linemen, and Slayton certainly fits that description. He was a regular starter at Syracuse since his freshman year, playing in 43 games over the past 4 years. He isn’t very widely known but the Giants have always had a close connection to the Orange and they see something in him.

However, the Giants already have a few similar players on the roster, so it’s a question how much playing time will be left for him. However, he could add to their rotation with his versatility to be able to play in multiple spots in the Giants‚Äô one-gap defense.

No one expects Slayton to be a force right away, but he can contribute, His addition brings depth to the team, and the preseason will be a great opportunity for him to earn playing time for when the NFL season kicks off in September.
