Summer School: Liberty with Alan York

Liberty took quite the step up in its second consecutive season playing Syracuse football. In 2019, when the two teams played for the first time ever, SU knocked the Flames’ socks off in a 24-0 win in which Liberty HC, Hugh Freeze, did his job from a hospital bed. The script was flipped in 2020 when Malik Willis assumed the role of QB, LU Trounced Dino Babers’ team, 38-24 in a season Syracuse would like to forget. Heading into 2021, Liberty looks to be quite the team, once again headed by Malik Willis and now seasoned headman Hugh Freeze.

Who to look out for on gameday:

Quarterback – Malik Willis #7

Malik Willis is looking to put on another show in his second game inside the Carrier Dome. Last season you may remember that Willis blew up the SU defense, rushing for 4 touchdowns on 338 yards while throwing for 182 yards on 16/20 passing and another score. The SU defense obviously wasn’t ready for his explosiveness, last time, and it doesn’t seem like they will be this time. Look for number 7 to make plays all day long.

Defensive Linemen – Durrell Johnson #11 & TreShaun Clark #10

These two guys are a bonafide wrecking crew. In 2020, Johnson and Clark had 14.0 sacks, 20.5 TFL, and 75 tackles between them. They were the heart and soul of this LU defense and look to do more this season. Sean Tucker and the rest of the SU RB room will once again have their work cut out for them against a certainly formidable opponent led by these two behemoths. Against Syracuse last season, Johnson and Clark combined for 2.0 sacks, 2.0 TFL, and 9 tackles. Look for more of the same come week four.
