Syracuse coaches are keeping an eye on 6’3’’, 225-pound inside linebacker Colton Cardinal. Cardinal attends Franklin High School in Franklin, Massachusetts and has also drawn interest from Boston College, Connecticut and Virginia. SU has not offered Cardinal a scholarship yet because coaches want to evaluate him further at a clinic in June.
Coming from a midsized public school in Massachusetts, Cardinal is flying under the radar and is somewhat of an unknown on the Division I recruiting circuit. None of the major recruiting websites has information on him. The Orange is certainly interested in his services, however, mainly because of his impressive tape.
On what he has to do to get an offer from SU:
“June 5th I go up to do a full workout [at a Syracuse football clinic]. They’re really focused on my speed. So I want to run a good 40, do a five-ten-five and an L drill and do the best I possibly can.”
On his visit in June:
“It’s a camp clinic, so they count it as a clinic. It’s invite-only. I’ll be there with probably 10 to 15 other recruits. We’ll all work out together. We do position specific drills and if [the coaches] like what they see, then I think I’ll get a scholarship later on that day.”
On his best attribute:
“I’d go with my size. I have pretty fast feet for my size. I like to think that APEX and our strength coach have worked me out hard over the years and it’s all paid off finally.”
On what he’s looking forward to most in his senior year:
“The brotherhood. This is a bond that I’ll probably never forget for the rest of my life. Looking back, I just want to have a winning season with the guys that I’ve played with my entire life.”
On what it would mean to him to get an SU offer:
“It would be great. It would definitely open up some doors for me. It would give me a whole bunch of self pride and make me feel like I’ve deserved what I’ve worked so hard for.”
